Imagine 30 years ago when you might have hunted all the libraries for a few minutes of garbage truck action .

Back in the day, your toddler had to wait all week to see them on their assigned day and they might see two or three of them.

I knew there were rail fans that produce videos of trains, but garbage trucks? The attraction of Russian crash videos makes sense...but garbage trucks? The internet is a weird place.

I’d personally recommend Mighty Machines for vehicle loving toddlers.

Our son has been racing to the window to watch them when they come since he was able to. Like 8-9 months old, at least.

Today we stood on Main Street waiting for his barber appointment watching trucks. Such an obsession.

There are garbage truck videos because dads use the internet.

I watched for 15 minutes uninterrupted . I thought it was great. You have to admit of all the vehicles to watch the contemporary garba ge truck is a mechanical treat. It’s clunky, violent, and efficient all in one.

I had no idea there were so many varieties too.

I feel a bit bad for those who still have the manual method. I noticed at 17:10 they were full manual like when I was a kid. And of course watching them drive around hanging on the back always looked like fun.

Nah, make them wait. One of the problems with the world today is that people are getting used to getting things exactly when they want it. Kids need to learn to wait. And many adults need to learn to wait.

Our garbage that driver honks and waives now. The other day I tossed him some water and he gave my boy a couple temp tattoos. Very nice guys.

It really is. The number of varieties really hit me, too. From the number of different styles of carts/bins to the amazing range of methods they use to dump them to the forms of the trucks themselves, it is kind of amazing that no system has become the standard way everyone does it. The only ones that seemed really standard were for dumpsters - rear load that pops open to dump (similar to the one my son has) and the fork lift front ones that seem to have been around forever. The variety all seems to be in residential service.

I was also impressed at points with the incredible talent at operating them that some of those drivers displayed. Like some would extend the arms as they were still moving, grabbing the cart flawlessly and dumping, them dropping them the moment they start moving to the next one.

When I was a kid they were fully manual like you remember. A couple guys would ride the dumpster it carried on the front, hop off at each stop, grab cans from both sides, fill the dumpster, then hop back on to the next stop until it was full, then they’d lift it into the back. I think the rear load dumpster ones can double for this duty as well and have a similar ride on the outside experience.

I’m sure they moved away from manual for safety (nobody hanging on the outside and less likely that they’d injure themselves lifting heavy containers).

I wonder if they realize how much little kids are into them. Once you’re a little older, it seems like a crappy job, but how else do you get to be a minor celebrity so easily?
